How to plan a corporate website with WordPress: 7 steps before design

Hizmet web pazaryeri

A website’s success is mostly decided by choices made before design. WordPress is a flexible platform, but without a plan, flexibility can mean clutter. Here are the planning steps I follow on corporate and e-commerce sites, from UX/UI briefs to launch.

1. Give the site one main goal

What should the site get a visitor to do? Request a quote, download a catalogue, go to the store, book an appointment or build brand trust… Once the main goal is clear, the primary button and content priority of every page follow. If there are several goals, rank them.

2. Sitemap and information architecture

Sketch the menu on paper: which pages exist and which sits under which? A typical skeleton for a corporate site is Home, About, Services/Products, Projects/References, Blog and Contact. A good target: visitors reach what they need in at most two clicks.

3. Content comes first

Designing with “lorem ipsum” breaks layouts once real text arrives. Home page copy, service descriptions, project details and images should be prepared before or alongside design. Project and reference photos in particular have the biggest impact on how good a site looks.

4. Design language: speak with the brand’s voice

  • Choose a colour palette and typography consistent with the corporate identity.
  • Use a small set of consistent components: buttons, cards and headings should look the same on every page.
  • Make the visual hierarchy clear: what should a visitor see first?

5. Theme and plugin choice

Modern block themes (Full Site Editing) are lightweight and flexible; page-builder plugins offer a quick start but can slow a site down. With plugins, “few but right” applies: one reliable plugin each for SEO, security, backups and, if needed, multilingual content is enough for most corporate sites.

6. Treat mobile as its own design

Most visitors arrive on phones. On mobile, the menu, tap-friendly button sizes, carousel or accordion patterns for long content and image loading speed each need planning. Shrinking the desktop design is not mobile design.

7. Set up SEO and measurement from day one

  • Readable URLs: /services/ rather than /?page_id=12.
  • A separate title and description for every page.
  • A sitemap, Google Search Console and, if needed, consent-based Analytics.
  • A privacy and cookie policy, and any obligations under data protection law (KVKK/GDPR).

Frequently asked questions

Usually Home, About, Services/Products, Projects/References, Blog, Contact and a Privacy Policy.
